Goalkeeper Training

IFC Goalkeeping Training Objective

To develop the techniques of goalkeeping with age/skill specific physical and mental training. Challenging exercises focusing on the fundamental principles and techniques to make safe and effective saves. Education to help foster cognitive thinking in order to assess and enhance faster decision-making.

Making saves starts with the proper equipment. All goalkeepers must bring:       

  • Positive Attitude
  • Proper inflated Ball
  • Padding shirt (long sleeves for diving and 1v1) & pants
  • Proper Footwear
  • Proper hair clips, bands etc.
  • Gloves (mandatory)
  • Water/Energy drinks
  • Medication

All other training equipment will be provided.

IFC Fall 2018 Goalkeeping Training Curriculum

  1. Game conditional training: (January-February) - goalkeepers will use their technical development effectively and apply it to game type situations like:
    • Receiving low and high balls
    • Mastering 1v1 situations
    • Breakaways
    • Angle play and positioning etc.
  2. Game assessments: (March - May) - more of a psychological areas of the game. Implementation of all aspects that the position entails:
    • Concentration and reading the game
    • Organizing their defense
    • Initiating the offence (traditionally being the first attacker)
    • Dealing with restart and set plays
    • Developing leadership qualities

  • React to games situations quickly and effectively with proper techniques
  • Tactically efficient (make quick and decisive mental assessments) e.g. reading the game
  • Display leadership qualities on the field
